Homepage navigation and site identity decision
Decision
Section titled “Decision”Use doc template with sidebar: hidden for the homepage — sidebar is hidden on desktop (clean landing page) but accessible via hamburger on mobile for navigation.
Context
Section titled “Context”The homepage uses Starlight’s splash template, which strips the sidebar and hamburger entirely. On mobile, this means no way to browse the docs from the homepage — only inline header links (Docs, Blog).
Options considered
Section titled “Options considered”- Keep splash, no hamburger — Docs/Blog links inline in header are sufficient. Simple, but users can’t browse the page tree from the homepage on mobile.
- Switch to doc template, hide sidebar on desktop — Hamburger appears on mobile, opens full page tree. Desktop stays clean. ← Chosen
- Custom hamburger with minimal menu — Build a standalone hamburger that opens just Docs/Blog/GitHub, not the full page tree. More work, less useful.
Why this matters later
Section titled “Why this matters later”This docs site is currently both the marketing site and the docs site. If Crosswalker grows to need:
- Pricing pages
- A product landing page separate from docs
- A marketing site with different branding/layout
…then the homepage would move to a separate site/layout, and the docs site would be purely docs (always showing sidebar). At that point, revisit this decision.
